This made me realize along with other sources that my boyfriend is verbally abusive. Everytime I tell him I’m upset about something he tells me I’m not allowed to be upset because what I’m upset about is stupid, and it’s his job to tell me I’m not allowed to be upset. Each time I talk to him about a problem in our relationship he manages to turn it around on me and make me question myself. I am afraid to even share my thoughts bc it always leads to an argument where I am always wrong.

I love Patricia Evans’s books, they have helped me a LOT! A comment about “withholding.” I have wondered if I was also abusive because I “withheld” when my angry, hostile, blaming & defining partner kept provoking me. If I opened my mouth I would get abused more. I know now that abuse is silencing, it seeks to erase you & turn you into a controllable puppet. RESISTING abuse by refusing to be manipulated was a healthy response, but only if I followed thru & ended the relationship, which I did.
